A golden harvest
Dominican karate team members Rubel Salomón and Heidy Rodríguez won first-place honors in their respective divisions yesterday, bringing the total number of gold medals won by the Dominican team in the Pan American Games to four. The DR is now in 8th place in the medal ranking, behind the United States, Cuba, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela and Argentina.
Sterling Féliz and Dionicio Gustavo won silver and bronze in their divisions, making karate the most successful Dominican federation so far. Weightlifting and boxing are also bringing in medals. Tomás Aquino and Guillermina Candelario won silver medals in their category in weightlifting, both surpassing former Pan Am records.
An interesting note is that just yesterday in the Listín Diario there was the announcement by the Santiago-based businessman Tony Turbí that he would give any gold medal winner RD$500,000. Hours later, Salomón and Rodríguez won theirs. They have also been promised RD$100,000 by the Bravo supermarket chain in Santo Domingo. Other medal winners will receive lesser sums from the supermarket firm.
