Cuban coach praises field-hockey field in Parque del Este

Guillermo Stakerman, Head Coach of the Cuban National team, rated the brand-new field-hockey field in the Complejo Olimpico Parque del Este of this city among the best in the continent.

Guillermo Stakerman, Head Coach of the Cuban National team, rated the brand-new field-hockey field in the Complejo Olimpico Parque del Este of this city among the best in the continent.

“It may be rated as a top-notch field, with an excellent surface, well located, the nearby facilities being at an advanced stage of construction” he explained a few minutes after celebrating his team’s championship in the Second Men’s Tour of the Americas played here.

“Hockey players attending the XIV Pan American games are going to feel very comfortable, in a good environment and I am sure we are going to have a good event” reported the coach, under whose direction the Cubans grabbed bronze medals in Winnipeg 1999 and won the Americas Cup held in Havana in 2000.

“I guess it’s going to look much more beautiful and functional by August than now as it is obvious that a lot of hard work is being done to that end” pointed out the coach, who is positive that the continental competition will be “tight and full of emotion”.

The II Men’s Tour of the Americas was a warm-up event prior to the Pan-American Games and awarded five places to the Pan American Cup, due to be played in Canada in May next year. These places were secured here by Cuba, United States, Mexico, the Netherlands Antilles and Puerto Rico, which finished the recent competition in that order.

The field hockey field in Parque del Este has been praised by coaches and authorities from international hockey associations who attended the II Tour of the Americas.

The Santo Domingo 2003 Games field hockey competition will be taking place in these modern facilities between August 2nd and 13th. Men’s and Women’s national squads will be competing.

Panam '2003 will feature another 34 sports: water sports (swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo), archery, athletics (track and field, marathon), badminton, basketball, baseball, bowling, boxing, canoe, cycling, equestrian, fencing, water ski, football, gymnastics, weight lifting, judo, karate, wrestling, skating, jai-alai, modern pentathlon, racquetball, rowing, softball, squash, tae-kwon-do, tennis, table tennis, shooting, triathlon, sailing, beach volleyball and volleyball.
